Meet graduates from the inaugural cohort of McMaster’s Global Surgery Diploma

An estimated five billion people worldwide still lack access to safe, timely surgical care, and surgical conditions account for nearly a third of the global burden of disease. Yet solutions to this challenge extend far beyond operating rooms — touching policy, education, systems design and equity across health systems everywhere.
That global reality is what inspired McMaster University’s new Graduate Diploma in Global Surgery. One of only a handful of programs of its kind in Canada, the fully online, asynchronous program is designed to be accessible across time zones, career stages and geographies. The program, housed within the Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine, brings together learners and faculty from around the world and across disciplines, with a curriculum focused on strengthening surgical care systems and improving access to affordable, high-quality care.
