Solid organ transplant patients in British Columbia who live outside of Vancouver must relocate to the city to receive care, incurring significant non-reimbursable out-of-pocket expenses. Despite ethical and legislative imperatives of action, no coordinated financial and accommodation support currently exists for this population at a provincial level. This paper examines the key barriers to policy implementation, including provincial political and fiscal constraints, ambiguous municipal roles and fragmented NGO-led services. It is crucial that we have a comprehensive, system-level response to ensure equitable access to healthcare for patients who must travel to receive medically necessary transplant services.
