Open Letter: Why Supporting Canadian Healthcare Publications Matters Now More Than Ever

Rebecca Hart

To our readers, subscribers, partners, and government leaders,

Since 1997, Longwoods Publishing has proudly stood as a Canadian-owned and Canadian-operated publisher, delivering healthcare research, policy insights, commentary, and news that matter to the health of our nation.

What began in Toronto as a small publishing house has grown into a respected platform connecting academics, clinicians, policymakers, administrators, and thought leaders from across the country, and around the world. Through our journals, learning events, and career board, we have created a space where Canadian healthcare knowledge is generated, shared, and applied to improve outcomes.

We have weathered tough times — economic downturns, shifting governments, major healthcare restructuring, and two pandemics — yet we have remained focused on our mission: to better care and enable excellence in healthcare policy.

But today, we face a challenge that threatens the very foundation of our work. <>With increasing budget pressures, Canadian libraries — in hospitals, universities, and research institutions — are making the difficult decision to cut subscriptions, including to Canadian-owned journals like ours. We understand the reality of constrained resources. But we also know this: every cancelled subscription represents a lost connection to the homegrown knowledge, innovation, and expertise that shapes healthcare practice and policy right here in Canada.

We urge you to reflect on what Longwoods provides:

  • An independent publishing platform showcasing the work of your professors, colleagues, and collaborators — people you know, trust, and work with.
  • A record of Canadian successes, challenges, and innovations in healthcare that inform decisions not just across the country, but often across the hallway.
  • A commitment to nurturing Canadian scholarship, while also engaging with international voices, partnerships, and ideas.

At a time when national healthcare systems are under intense pressure, we believe it is more important than ever to invest in Canadian knowledge.

We call on libraries, healthcare institutions, universities, governments, and individual readers to:

  • Protect access to the Canadian research and analysis that helps improve our health systems.
  • Champion local expertise by ensuring small independent Canadian publishers have the support they need to thrive.
  • Speak up, let your libraries and leaders know you value the unique contribution of homegrown publications like Healthcare Quarterly, Healthcare Papers, Healthcare Policy and Nursing Leadership

We are here for you. We want to continue serving you. But we need your help to ensure Longwoods remains a vibrant, independent voice supporting healthcare excellence in Canada.

Together, let’s keep Canadian knowledge in Canadian hands, for today’s leaders, tomorrow’s learners, and the future of healthcare.
