Choosing Digital Technologies Wisely: Six Dimensions to DECIDE
Choosing Wisely Canada has made significant progress over the past five years in positively influencing the Canadian health system to improve its performance. Digital technologies present both opportunities and challenges in contributing to Choosing Wisely. This article presents a six-dimension framework called DECIDE to help health system stakeholders, including clinicians, patients, health system decision makers and technology partners, to consider how best to harmonize digital technologies into healthcare delivery to increase efficacy and cost-effectiveness. These six dimensions include the following: Digital mirror, Ethics, Competition, Interoperability, Discovery and Emerging future. This framework will hopefully serve as a useful approach to support the decision-making process in choosing digital technologies wisely for our health system to perform well today and be ready for tomorrow’s evolving health service delivery for years to come.
